BC Ferries says Denman Is. cable ferry will be ready for service in late summer

BC Ferries says its new cable ferry between Buckley Bay and Denman Island will be carrying vehicles and passengers by late summer.

VP of Engineering Mark Wilson says work to lay the cables is set for this month, and once the ferry is delivered they’ll start sea trials.

The BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union is among those who’ve opposed the plan. They launched a petition and even went to court to try to get the project stopped.

Some residents have also raised concerns about reliability and safety.

According to Wilson, “The cable ferry will provide the same level of safe and reliable service that our Denman and Hornby Island customers have come to expect, while realizing substantial cost savings of over $80 million over the 40-year life of the project compared to the current traditional ferry service.”
