Boundary Commission reports suggests some changes for Island, none for Sunshine Coast

BC’s Electoral Boundaries Commission is suggesting changes to provincial ridings on the Island.

The Commission says population growth in Comox Valley means some of that area needs to be added to another riding, but they’ve rejected moving Hornby and Denman Islands to Powell River Sunshine Coast.

Instead, they want them in a new riding that would include Alberni Pacific Rim and other parts of Comox Valley.

Tom Melnick is the Commission Chair.

The Commission also wants to:

Extend the northern boundary of Parksville Qualicum.

Put VIU and the college heights neighbourhood of Nanaimo into the riding of Nanaimo

Move the boundary between Nanaimo and Nanaimo North Cowichan from 5th to 4th Street.

The Commission is also suggesting 2 new ridings on the Lower Mainland.

The next steps include public hearings, and input from MLAs before a final report in September.
