Christmas Bird Count happening Sunday in Nanaimo

The annual Christmas Bird Count is something a lot of avid birders look forward to. Coordinated by The National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada, this is the 115th year birders across Canada are taking part.

It took place last Saturday on the Sunshine Coast. Tony Greenfield is President of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society and compiler for the Christmas Bird Count. He says despite the bad weather, birders still braved the elements to see how many species they could spot.

Nanaimo’s Christmas Bird Count is coming up on Sunday, Dec 28. For Kim Goldberg, this will be her 37th year participating in the event. She says the goal is to count the number of birds, and the variety of species.

Participants will scour every corner of the city, plus parts of Gabriola Island and Cedar.

Goldberg says you don’t have to be an expert to take part. It can be as easy as counting the birds that come to your backyard feeder. Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can join a team of birders and go out in the field. To get involved, call Rhys Harrison 250-248-5305 or send him an email at [email protected].
