Conservation group calls for a fee at Nanaimo Airport to pay for aquifer protection

A local conservation group says a 5 dollar fee at the Nanaimo Airport could go a long way to protecting a vital source of drinking water.

Laurie Goulay of the Vancouver Island and Coast Conservation Society says the money would be turned over to an independent body to look after the Cassidy aquifer.

And Gourlay says collecting it from Airport users makes perfect sense.

The Cassidy Aquifer provides water for part of the CVRD, Cedar, Yellowpoint, Cassidy and South Wellington.

Gourlay says they’re planning a public meeting on the initiative in late May and they’d like local governments and the Airport Authority to take part.
