Conservative MP John Weston reiterates support for Bill C-51

The Harper government’s controversial Bill C-51 goes to a House of Commons Committee today. The anti-terrorism legislation will get a clause-by-clause review.

Late last week, there was word the government was planning four amendments, including clarification that public protests cannot be considered terrorist acts.

West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast MP John Weston has supported C-51 from the beginning.

The government amendments will also include changing language so that it’s clear CSIS agents won’t have the power to arrest people.

Weston says one aspect that many are overlooking is that C-51 contains important changes to bring CSIS into the digital age.

The NDP has been calling for more oversight of the intelligence agency, but the government amendments don’t address that issue.

Both the NDP and the Liberals plan on putting forward their own amendments.
