Crowder derelicts bill going before MPs

Nanaimo Cowichan MP Jean Crowder could get a chance Thursday to showcase her private members bill on derelict vessels.

The bill is on the list for debate in the House of Commons. It would give the Coast Guard the primary responsibility for dealing with derelicts.

Local governments in the area are supporting the effort, most recently the RDN and Ladysmith.

Ladysmith Mayor Aaron Stone says there’s a long history of attempts to deal with the issue.

West Vancouver Sunshine Coast MP John Weston, meanwhile, has formed a working group of local governments from around Howe Sound. Weston, a Conservative, says they may want to suggest amendments.

If MPs vote in favour of Crowder’s bill at this stage, it’s still a long way from becoming law. It would have to go to a committee then come back for more votes in the Commons.
