Parking in downtown Nanaimo and in the Old City Quarter will be free on evenings and weekends for a year.
Nanaimo Council approved the request from DNBIA Chair John Cooper Monday night.
The change applies only to metered spaces and surface lots. It’ll still cost to park in the 2 main parkades.
Cooper admits it’ll have an impact on parking revenues, but he says Victoria, Kelowna and Calgary are doing it and seeing benefits.
Cooper says the revenue loss will be minimal, and the extra money coming in from recently approved higher parking rates will help make up for it.
